Exciting PhD Opportunities in Swiss Rococo Architectural and Art History at ETH Zurich
ETH Zurich, one of the world’s leading universities, is inviting applications for two PhD positions in the field of Swiss Rococo Architectural and Art History. These positions will be part of a fascinating project titled “Swiss Rococo Cultures: Idioms of Ornament and the Architecture of East Switzerland (1700-1850).” The successful candidates will join the Chair for the History and Theory of Architecture, led by Prof. Dr. Maarten Delbeke, and will start on February 17, 2025.
Project Overview
The research project aims to explore the architecture and material culture of East Switzerland, particularly focusing on the cantons of St. Gallen and Appenzell during the 18th and early 19th centuries. It seeks to understand how the Rococo style was adopted and transformed by various social classes, generating unique ornamental idioms across different objects and buildings.
Key Research Questions
The project will delve into several intriguing questions, including:
- How were decorative patterns disseminated across different media?
- What roles did itinerant craftspeople and wealthy patrons play in this cultural exchange?
- How did different social groups interpret and utilize Rococo ornamental forms?
- What factors contributed to the enduring presence of Rococo in East Switzerland into the 19th century?
- How did the distinction between “high art” and “folk art” evolve in this context?
