About the Department
UCLA’s Department of Art is dedicated to exploring key developments in contemporary art from 1960 to the present. The department emphasizes the historical, political, and intellectual contexts in which art is created and interpreted.
Responsibilities
Candidates will be responsible for teaching various topics related to the history of contemporary art, including:
- Sample Class Topic: Critiques of Modernism
- This course will explore the impact and transformation of art in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, focusing on critiques of modernism and the evolution of postmodern practices. Students will analyze how various social dimensions—such as race, gender, and class—shape the production and reception of contemporary art.
Learning Objectives
Courses will aim to deepen students’ understanding of:
- The influence of social factors on contemporary art.
- The relationship between contemporary art and various emancipatory movements.
- Historical developments in contemporary art since the 1960s.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications
- A Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) is required; a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) is preferred.
