Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design (GSD) is proud to announce an opening for a Professor or Professor in the Practice of Design Science. This newly established endowed professorship honors the legacy of R. Buckminster Fuller, a renowned designer, inventor, and scientist committed to addressing pressing global challenges through innovative design.
Position Overview

- Position Type: Full-time tenured or senior part-time practice position
About the Role
The successful candidate will join a dynamic academic community dedicated to exploring systemic, ethical, and innovative approaches to contemporary global issues through design. The appointee will have the opportunity to:
- Teach and engage with students across various GSD degree programs, including architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning and design, design studies, and design engineering.
- Collaborate with faculty across all academic departments and programs within the GSD and other Harvard schools.
This position seeks an effective educator with a strong record of creative research, either through scholarship or practice, that advances one or more disciplines related to design science.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications
- Candidates pursuing scholarly research are generally expected to hold a Ph.D.
- Design practitioners may possess an alternative terminal degree suitable for a tenured or senior practice appointment.
Additional Qualifications
- A demonstrated ability to bridge disciplines and promote collaborative research and pedagogy.
- Experience in teaching and mentoring diverse student cohorts.
