The University of Salerno is thrilled to announce the availability of three PhD positions for the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action Doctoral Network project titled “StoryPharm – Storytelling as Pharmakon in Premodernity and Beyond: Training the New Generation of Researchers in Health Humanities.” This initiative aims to cultivate a new generation of researchers specializing in the intersection of storytelling and health humanities.
About the StoryPharm Project
The StoryPharm project focuses on the role of storytelling in premodern healthcare systems and its implications for contemporary practices. The research will explore various historical contexts, aiming to enhance our understanding of how narratives shape medical knowledge and societal health practices.
Position Details
- Number of Positions: 3 PhD Fellowships
- Location: University of Salerno, Italy
- Contract Duration: 3 years (starting between June and August 2025)

Key Responsibilities
PhD candidates will engage in interdisciplinary research, contributing to the following subprojects:
- Narrative Physicians: Investigating the social roles of physicians in Southern Italy and Medieval France.
- Images of Christ’s Miraculous Healings: Analyzing iconographic representations of healing in medieval art.
- The Healthy Place: Exploring the architecture and narratives of healing sites in Southern Italy.
Eligibility Criteria
To apply, candidates must:
- Hold or be about to obtain a Master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., History, Art History, Medieval Studies).
- Be a first-stage researcher with no prior doctoral degree.
- Have resided outside the recruiting country for more than 12 months in the last three years (mobility rule).
