Research Focus

The PhD student will be part of the CityFish project, which aims to explore aquaculture in urban settings, particularly in Hanoi, Vietnam. This interdisciplinary project will investigate several critical issues:

  • The impact of urban pollution on aquaculture practices.
  • The role of aquaculture in the environment-food system-human health nexus.
  • The challenges faced by farmers in polluted urban contexts.

Project Context

Aquaculture is one of the fastest-growing sectors in the global food system, producing millions of tons of fish annually. However, urban and periurban aquaculture farms are often exposed to significant pollution, raising concerns about both environmental health and food safety. The CityFish project aims to document these challenges using a One Health approach, which considers the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

  • Conduct qualitative interviews with aquaculture farmers and stakeholders in Hanoi.
  • Analyze farming practices and their implications for health and environmental management.
  • Develop a theoretical framework that incorporates various fields such as sociology, political ecology, and critical food studies.

Qualifications

Required Criteria

  • A Master’s degree or equivalent in Geography, Architecture, or Sociology.
  • Interest in interdisciplinary research related to environmental issues.

Language Skills

  • Basic knowledge of French is preferred, facilitating communication during fieldwork.
